| THE CHIFFONS Many regard this Bronx, New York outfit as the quintessential girl group, with their dazzling harmonies and sassy demeanor. High School friends Judy Craig, Patricia Bennett, Barbara Lee, and Sylvia Peterson were spotted by future manager Ronald Mack, who arranged for the group to cut a number of demo's, including one of his own compositions, "He's So Fine." While doing the rounds of possible record labels, the demo came to the attention of vocal group, The Tokens, who recognised the song's hit making potential. They helped find a home for them at the Laurie label, where the single was released and, sure enough, was a huge hit. After a couple of follow up singles flopped, they decided to try the 'fine' theme again and put out the Goffin/King number "One Fine Day", originally recorded by Little Eva. With it's infectious vocal and upbeat sound, it became The Chiffons second smash on both sides of the Atlantic. Another 'fine' song was picked for the follow up, "A Love So Fine" which gave them their third hit of 1963. The beginning of the British Invasion kept the group off the charts, though ironically, these bands loved The Chiffons, who toured with both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones over the next few years. The group returned to the charts with the mighty "Sweet talkin' Guy" in 1966 that featured more of a Motown sound. But it was to be their last hit, though they released a number of well respected singles on Laurie and other labels. The Chiffons re-entered the publics consciousness again thanks to court action involving George Harrison, who was charged with copying "He's So Fine" on his release "My Sweet Lord." Though Harrison claimed any plagiarism was subliminal, he lost the case. Though members have come and gone, The Chiffons continue to perform to this day. SELECTED DISCOGRAPHY
